Niakwa On-Line News Brief
Volume 9 No. 1 Community News & Information May 18, 2005 In this issue: SP1 FOR SERVER 2003 KILLS DCOM 5.10 FOR SCO OPENSERVER MEMORIAL DAY SCHEDULE SP1 FOR SERVER 2003 KILLS DCOM Programs that use DCOM may not work correctly after Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is installed. According to Microsoft, this occurs because the default Component Object Model (COM) permissions are changed in Windows Server 2003 SP1. The new COM permissions restrict remote calls that are not authenticated. The COM program may work locally, but the remote calls that are not authenticated fail. By default, only members of the Administrators group have the Remote Activation permission and the Launch permissions. This change prevents user accounts that do not belong to the Administrators group from starting COM components. Correcting this problem involves editing the Registry and is fully explained in Article ID: 892500 on the Microsoft website. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892500
